Profile on the Grenada Employers' Federation

GEF was established in September 1962 and registered as a Trade Union to represent employers. During the early 60's turbulent period private employers could not totally depend upon the Grenada Chamber of Commerce then, the only private sector organization to handle the upsurge of industrial and labour relations issues. It was a period of intense political instability and much industrial unrest and work stoppages as rival unions (GMMIWU) some with sympathy for the political party in power and employers for the political party in opposition (GNP) test their popularity and created industrial havoc, much to the discomfort of employers.

The GEF grew to be recognized as an employers' association on industrial relation matters and one of the social partners that is consulted on labour policy matters.

GEF became the guardian of private sector interest to ensure that government would have prior consultations with the Federation as one of the social partners on national labour policy before the enactment of any labour legislation at the national level.
